Our calendars are packed with international commemorative days. We’ve got World Laughter Day on January 10, International Sculpture Day on April 24, World Mosquito Day (umm…what?) on August 20, and – probably my personal favorite – World Food Day on October 23.

What we don’t have, though, is a commemorative day dedicated to animated videos. And that’s a shame, because videos have done a lot to deserve a special holiday all their own.

Here are three big reasons why we should be celebrating International Video Day… not just today, but every day of the year.

Most of the web is video

You’ve probably heard that the web contains more information than we humans have created for most of our history. In fact, every two days, we create as much brand-new data as we did from the beginning of civilization, all the way up to the year 2003!

And while a lot of that data appears in the forms of photos, infographics, tweets and tests, the vast majority of it comes in the form of – you guessed it – video. Streaming videos account for a full 74 percent of all traffic on the web, every single day. That’s more than email, blog posts, or any other form of media – which is pretty amazing!

We watch online videos every day

Try to think back to the last time you browsed through a social-media feed that didn’t include some video posts. If you’re anything like me, you probably find it hard to remember a time when video wasn’t part of your everyday online experience. Your Facebook feed is packed with videos. If you’re on Twitter and Instagram, you’ll find plenty of video there, too. And that’s just the beginning.

We watch videos of news stories. We stream video presentations for work. We check out YouTube tutorials to help us get a stain out of the carpet – or teach the dog a new trick. In the midst of all this, we catch loads of fun animated advertisements from brands with stories to tell.

Videos are fun to watch

There’s a whole list of good reasons why videos are beating out every other form of media on the web. Compared to text and still images, videos have proven time and again that they’re more engaging, more entertaining, more memorable – and most of all, fun to watch.

After all, who’d want to just read about cute puppies in superhero costumes, instead of watching a video clip of them all playing together? The same goes for brand awareness, too – a fun, eye-catching animated video grabs customers’ attention much more powerfully than text alone ever could.

As a matter of fact, many marketers think online video is only going to become even more popular from here on out. That means that within the next few years, just about everybody will be watching online videos, all the time. For most of us, every day already is International Video Day – so why not make it official?
